Honourable Colonial Secretary,

1.

The proposed site of the shed is on reclaimed

ground over sea bed, the depth of filling, which is

material partly dredged from the Harbour bottom, being

approximately 12 feet, the solid or firm ground being

about 25 feet, below the sea bed or, in all, a total

depth of approximately 37 feet, from formation level to

firm ground.

II.

It will therefore be necessary to either pile,

grill, or float the foundations for the structure.

III.

The site will be exposed to the full force of

the wind from the sea, the seawalling being about 150 feet

from the face of the shed which will have a southerly

aspect.

IV.

The highest wind force recorded in the Colony

is 130 miles per hour and during typhoons is of a very

gusty nature. It should be noted that a good deal

of the damage to property is caused by the vacuum that

is created and the subsequent "drawing out", this

condition being caused by the gusty nature of the winds.

I forward a plan that has been prepated by

the Public Works Department showing a skeleton plan,

section and half end elevation of the proposed shed the

dimensions of which are 250 feet in length (centre to

centre of end stanchions) by a width of 120 feet clear

between main stanchions and a door opening of a height

of 30 feet clear of underside of door guides.

V.

VI.

On the information at the disposal of the

local Public Works Department the foregoing dimensions are

understood to meet the requirements of the interests

involved and if the home authorities are in agreement with

them it is recommended that the Crown Agents be instructed.
